Harmony: Speaking Up to Speak Out

A teenage girl named “Harmony” came to Voices Carry for a forensic interview after disclosing about sexual abuse perpetrated by her older brother. While the abuse had been happening for years, Harmony’s story only began to surface after a teacher suspected abuse. Some people in her household knew about the abuse, but no one supported Harmony. Harmony began attending high school during the time of her visit, adding another difficult dynamic to her life. She was struggling with depression and suicidal thoughts.

During her interview, Harmony shared what had occurred with her brother over a time-span of five years. It was the first time she was able to talk to someone who didn’t accuse her of causing the abuse. She explained that her other siblings and parents blamed her for tempting her brother, which only added to the guilt and self-hatred that often occurs for victims of child sexual abuse. She was taught to always listen to people older than her, including her older brother who abused her and parents who did not protect her. While Harmony is still struggling with the emotional distress and other effects of these traumatic events, the ability for her to have a voice was monumental in her growth and strength to stand up against her abuser.
