What We Do

The Crawford Child Advocacy Center is the only agency in Larimer and Jackson Counties that is accredited by the National Children’s Alliance.

Our work is to prevent child maltreatment–primarily physical and sexual abuse–and, when it cannot be prevented, to provide law enforcement and caseworkers with forensic services to help stop perpetrators and to protect and support victims and their families.

Forensic Services

We provide a safe and comfortable space for children who are involved in current child abuse investigations without the need to tell the details of their abuse more than once. When law enforcement and child protection agencies have an open child abuse investigation, they turn to us to perform specialized forensic interviews. When families come to our facility, our Family Advocates will meet with child victims’ non-offending caregivers to provide resources to begin their next step of healing. Child Abuse Prevention

The Crawford Child Advocacy Center also offers child abuse prevention training. We provide an extensive K-5 curriculum to teach children about general safety rules and how to recognize, refuse, and report unsafe and unwanted touches. We also provide a child abuse prevention programs to adults who want to learn to recognize and react responsibly to risks of child abuse. To learn more about prevention, please visit our Abuse Prevention for Adults or Abuse Prevention for Kids pages.

Why it Matters

Child abuse and molestation happen in our community more often than you may realize.

  • One in 10 children will be a victim of sexual abuse before age 18.
  • More than 90% of sexually abused children know the offender. Most perpetrators are family members.
  • In 2022 we conducted 318 forensic interviews and provided advocacy services to 887 non-offending caregivers and family members.
  • In 2022, the Department of Human Services received over 2,400 reports of child abuse and neglect in Larimer County alone.
  • The Center for Disease Control estimates that child maltreatment victims who don’t receive intervention or care will cost a community over $287,178 each (2023 dollars) in additional physical and mental healthcare costs, social services support, and lost productivity.

For the first time, The Swimsuit Lesson, an internationally popular children’s book by Jon Holsten that helps protect children from sexual predators, is available in Spanish!
