About: This training will explore the pervasive issue of child-on-child and juvenile sexual offending behaviors. First, we will examine the developmental trajectory of sexuality in childhood and adolescence and evaluate sexual Interactions and behavior. Second, we will review the Colorado Standards and Guidelines for the Evaluation, Assessment, Treatment, and Supervision of Juveniles Who Have Committed Sexual Offenses. Lastly, a goal-oriented management approach and the role’s and responsibilities of the caregivers, caseworkers, and treatment providers engaging with these families and youth will be presented.
Presenter: Gail Ryan, MA – Kempe Center and University of Colorado School of Medicine
Gail Ryan has worked at the Kempe Center for Prevention and Treatment of Child Abuse and Neglect in Denver since 1975 and retired from the University of Colorado School of Medicine in September 2005. She continues part-time as an Assistant Clinical Professor in the Department of Pediatrics and is focusing on dissemination. She continues to teach a certificate course on treatment of juveniles who have sexually offended. She has trained hundreds of trainers in more than 20 states to use the Kempe curriculum she developed, Primary, Secondary and Tertiary Perpetration Prevention in Childhood and Adolescence. For more than 20 years, Ryan has worked with Dr. Jeffrey Metzner to provide offense specific treatment for 11 to 17-year-old males who have molested children. Her primary interests are in the correlation between early life experience and dysfunctional behavior with an emphasis on prevention of the development of abusive behaviors in ‘at-risk’ groups.
